Alba’s Power Station 5 Block 4 Wins Power Generation Project of the Year - Bahrain at 2025 MEED Projects Awards

Aluminium Bahrain B.S.C. (Alba), the world’s largest aluminium smelter on one site, has been awarded Power Generation Project of the Year - Bahrain for its Power Stations 5 (PS5) Block 4 at the 2025 MEED Projects Awards, reaffirming its leadership in sustainable industrial energy solutions.

Alba’s Chief Power Officer Amin Sultan and Acting Manager PS5 Power Maintenance Sayed Amer accepted the award on the Company’s behalf at the Awards' ceremony held, in association with Mashreq, on 19 November 2025, Dubai, UAE.

Commencing commercial operations on 22 December 2024, PS5 Block 4 is a landmark project for Alba and the aluminium industry. Powered by Mitsubishi Power’s hydrogen-ready M701JAC gas turbine, the Block delivers a combined cycle output of 680.9 MW, marking the first deployment of this advanced technology in a Middle East-based aluminium smelter. This Project increased Alba’s PS5 Complex capacity from 1,800 MW to 2,481 MW, while reducing the Company’s GHG emissions intensity ratio by 0.5 tonnes of CO₂ per tonne of aluminium produced, supporting Alba’s alignment with Bahrain’s Net Zero Emissions by 2060 goals.

On this occasion, Alba’s Chief Executive Officer, Ali Al Baqali, stated: “Being recognised in Bahrain for PS5 Block 4 reinforces our role as a national champion driving operational excellence and environmental stewardship. PS5 Block 4 is a strategic enabler for our long-term growth and Bahrain’s Net Zero 2060 goals carbon neutrality. By integrating hydrogen-ready technology, we are future-proofing our operations and setting a benchmark for industrial energy solutions across the region.”

Adding further, Alba’s Chief Power Officer, said: PS5 Block 4 represents a milestone in power generation for the aluminium industry. Deploying Mitsubishi Power’s advanced M701JAC gas turbine allows us to deliver 680.9 MW of efficient, reliable energy while reducing emissions intensity. This project demonstrates how cutting-edge technology, and operational excellence can work together to meet Alba’s growing energy needs sustainably.”

The MEED Projects Awards celebrate the best projects completed across the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. With 87 projects across 17 categories, winners were selected based on engineering excellence, innovation, sustainability and societal impact.
