“First and foremost, I am deeply honoured to stand before Your Majesty today. I humbly extend my sincere thanks and appreciation for Your Majesty’s generous patronage of this delightful celebration and gracing Aluminium Bahrain B.S.C. (Alba) with Your Majesty’s presence to officially inaugurate the Line 6 Expansion Project which makes Alba the largest smelter in the world ex-China.
We are honoured with the presence of Your Majesty at the inauguration of this mega project in the aluminium industry - a source of pride to the Kingdom of Bahrain - that will contribute to its transformation.
Reduction Line 6 - one of the longest reduction lines in the world that comprises 424 reduction cells built over an area of 1,400 metres - will add 540,000 metric tonnes per annum to the company’s total production capacity bringing it to more than 1.5 million metric tonnes, a remarkable growth from being a 120,000 mtpa aluminium smelter when it was commissioned back in 1971.
I would also like to express my thanks and appreciation to His Royal Highness Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa the Prime Minister, and His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa the Crown Prince, First Deputy Prime Minister and Deputy Supreme Commander, for their wise directives and unlimited support to our Company’s growth and development.

Alba is one of the industrial cornerstones of the Kingdom of Bahrain. We are deeply committed to the Kingdom’s Economic Vision 2030 and proudly partake in the development of the society in which we operate. Being one of Bahrain’s flagship assets, Alba Line 6 Expansion Project is not just a landmark achievement for Alba, but also a qualitative leap for Bahrain and its people.

It gives me pleasure on this joyful occasion to express our thanks to our partners in this project: Bechtel - EPCM contractor for Reduction Line 6, GE and GAMA Consortium - the EPC contractor for Power Station (PS) 5 and Siemens - the Power Distribution System contractor for PS 5 and all the contractors involved in this Project, specifically to the local contractors who have all contributed towards the success of this Project.”
One of the largest brownfield projects in the Region, Alba’s Line 6 Expansion Project is a remarkable success in so many ways to include an achieved savings of more than US$370 million in the execution of Reduction Line 6 – corresponding to 16% savings of its allotted budget. Some of these savings were utilised to upgrade Alba Port for importing and handling more raw materials, as well as to finance other projects related to Line 6 Expansion Project.
Reduction Line 6 was commissioned on 13 December 2018 with the delivery of the First Hot Metal, ahead of its scheduled date on 01 January 2019. This was the fastest construction ever-delivered in the aluminium industry.
In addition, Line 6 Expansion Project has set benchmarks in sustainable aluminium production with both Reduction Line 6 and PS 5. Implementation of the proprietary Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA) DX+ Ultra Technology in Reduction Line 6 enables Alba to increase its output with no increase in energy consumption, while adopting GE’s 9HA Gas Turbine technology in PS 5 has made it the most efficient Combined-Cycle power plant in the Gulf region.
The Line 6 Expansion Project also echoed Alba’s strong Safety culture by recording more than
(60,893,000) working-hours without Lost Time Injury as at 21 November 2019 – a notable feat in the aluminium smelting industry.
Alba attributes the success of Line 6 Expansion Project to its 3,200-plus employees of which more than 83% are nationals and a strong Health, Safety and Environment Management System, which is in line with the international standards and practices.
Brendan P. Bechtel, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Bechtel also delivered the following speech:
Your Majesty Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, King of the Kingdom of Bahrain, His Royal Highness Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa, the Prime Minister, Supreme Commander First Deputy Prime Minister, Your Excellency’s Top Officials, Ministers and Ambassadors, Your Excellency Shaikh Daij bin Salman Daij Al Khalifa, Alba Chairman Esteemed CEOs of Participating Companies Most Welcomed guests,
I remember visiting the Line 6 project for the first time back on February 14 of last year with His Royal Highness the Crown Prince and His Excellency Shaikh Daij. We were looking north towards the start of Line 6 more than a kilometer away, and frankly there wasn’t a lot to see. We hadn’t even started putting up the structural steel for room E.
Meanwhile, First Hot Metal was scheduled less than 11 months away. I recall thinking at the time that 11 months never sounded so short.
Some people even thought it was impossible.
So to be here with you again today, celebrating this project’s completion in the presence of His Majesty the King as an outstanding show of support from the kingdom’s wise leadership… it’s incredibly exciting and inspiring.
Amazing results are possible when partners come together as one team with one mission.
And there’s no better example than this Alba, Bechtel, Supplier and Contractor team.
You achieved first hot metal six months faster than the industry average. You also delivered this project with a total installed cost significantly better than the benchmark for these projects.
And you did it safely -- 43 million hours worked safely, on a job with 11,000 people on site every day during its peak construction period.
It’s also important to say ... great projects are measured by more than just concrete and steel in the ground.
They leave a legacy in the form of lasting benefits to the local community and the region. And this is absolutely true for Line 6 as an important pillar in His Majesty King Hamad’s reform project and in line with the legacy that started 50 years ago with the establishment of Alba as the first smelter in Middle East. Over 30 percent of the procurement and 20 percent of the contracts on this project went to local Bahraini firms.
Obviously, this generates jobs and revenue. But it also builds skills and experience in the local economy. And these, in turn, become the seeds for future opportunities and pave the way for more prosperity as part of Bahrain’s vision 2030.
So when we say this is a history-making project ... we aren’t just referring to the fact that this is now the largest single-site aluminum smelter in the world (outside of China)
What also makes it historic is the statement it makes about the future for Alba and the Kingdom of Bahrain.
This project went forward at a challenging time in the market, when very few were bold enough to invest.
Instead, you saw this as an opportunity. And the result is a project that serves an emblem of the Kingdom’s vision and its leadership in the Gulf Region.
So in conclusion... Thank you, your Majesty and Royal Highnesses for placing your trust and confidence in this project.
Thank you, your Excellency Alba Chairman for turning this royal vision into reality Special thanks to every member of the Alba, Bechtel, Suppliers and Contractors team.
You accepted this extraordinary challenge. You never gave up, never gave in, and never looked back.
And thanks to your incredible focus and dedication, you truly set a new standard of excellence.
Congratulations. You all deserve to be proud.
I can’t tell you how much I look forward to our next opportunity to work together, and to raise the bar even higher.
On this occasion, Alba also received congratulatory messages from key partners of the Line 6 Expansion Project.
Abdulla Jasim bin Kalban, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA), said:

The Line 6 Expansion Project clearly demonstrates Alba’s position as a leader in the smelting industry as they continue to deploy advanced technology to enhance their operational efficiency and productivity as well as drive growth. We remain committed to working with Alba on its strategic growth priorities and to supporting the Kingdom of Bahrain’s Vision 2030 goals.”
Mahmoud Hanafy, Senior Vice President, Transmission Solutions, Siemens Middle East, said:
